Communication Skills - Communicating with Your Children

Many people think that they need a psychological analysis to aid them in speaking to and understanding their children, but this is not the case.

Sometimes as adults we forget that we, too, were children at some stage in our lives. We easily forget how we felt when certain events took place in our lives and things were strange and scary for us, and this leads us to think that our children see the way that we do. It is important that we bear in mind that this just is not the case.

Children are scared and they are vulnerable. Many of them won’t tell you that because they don’t know it themselves and if they do they don’t know how to articulate it enough to make you understand. That is why it is our duty as parents to try and empathize with them at all times, and this means trying to put ourselves in their shoes by thinking about how they feel and how we felt when we were at their level. The best thing we can do is to listen to them; this is a key player in communication because without a listener there is no communication, just talking. Listen and it should bring back nostalgic feelings that will help you to put yourself in their position, and this in turn will help you to understand and communicate with your children.

Never try and be their friends, they will have enough friends. What they need is parents and family who are able to listen to their feelings and communicate with them to successfully provide for them.
