Interview Tips - Overview

interview tips

For many people job interviews may seem a rather daunting task, but with effective communication there is nothing to worry about.

When going into an interview it is very hard to make an excuse for tardiness. General job interview tips tend to specify how crucial punctuality is, but it is important to realize that it also plays a role in effective communication. Punctuality in an interview communicates your dedication to being on time in your daily duties, and it is thus critical that you communicate your commitment to being on time by being punctual for the interview.

Another factor which is just as difficult to excuse is displaying a lack of confidence. An interviewee needs to communicate his confidence not only when he first steps through the door, but at all times during the interview by answering with self-assurance (but not cockiness), and by answering confidently regarding details about his skills and education.

Confidence is hard to maintain without the correct amount of preparation. Job interview tips may stress the importance of preparation, but it is important to remember that if you are not properly prepared for the interview it will show through in your answers. Many job interview tips specify that you should thoroughly research the organization that you’re applying to. While this is definitely important, it is vital that you realize that it is probably more important to research yourself, namely that you should be well-versed regarding your skills and anything about yourself that may impact upon you chances of securing the job. By displaying confidence in your abilities, you effectively communicate that you are the ideal candidate for the job.

Your clothes communicate a lot about yourself. The correct attire is crucial in job interviews and it is important that you communicate this effectively. Formal language ensures that you are regarded as a serious candidate. Many interviewees tend to become too relaxed in an interview, so much so that they forget to maintain a formal disposition at all times throughout and even after the interview.

While language is important, constant eye contact with the interviewer is crucial, as this is a form of non verbal communication which tells the interviewer that you are attentive and sincere. This means that you should display an interest in what the interviewer says to your responses to his questions and that you should answer him confidently, maintaining eye contact throughout. Looking around generally displays a lack of interest and, in an interview, that you are insufficiently prepared; so it is to be avoided at all costs.

Non verbal communication is an essential part of any interview and probably the most overlooked factor. While interviewees disregard it, though, it is generally quite a prominent factor considered by interviewers. Do not fiddle with a pen or paper, do not tap your feet or shake your leg as this will appear rude or convey the message that you are not interested in the interview. Many interviewees also have the atrocious habit of constantly moving around, but it is essential that these mannerisms are avoided at all costs.

Be confident, prepared and be aware of effective communication skills, both verbal and non verbal, and your interview will be a great success.
