Using Social Networks

using social networks

Social Networks
The massive popularity of social networks such as MySpace, LiveJournal, and Facebook is beyond dispute; they provide a very public place for us to represent ourselves online. Be intentional about the information you choose to present about yourself. Your online reputation is made of everything we put under our name. When potential friends and clients visit your page, make sure they see something that is consistent with who you are, what you do, and what you are working on.

Bookmarks
Choose well-written articles that reflect the way you think about your work or life. Do you link back to “Girls Gone Wild” or a research journal in your field?

Damage control
Take down all the pictures and notes that you wouldn’t want future employers to see. Being able to party hard won’t win many brownie points.

Own your brand
When someone searches for your name, make sure you have as much control over what they see, as possible. The more places you create a profile and actively maintain it, the better off you will be. Do you have a Flickr account, LinkedIn profile, MySpace, Facebook, and a BizNik account?

Note about selection of friends as well. Be careful whom you associate with and who can see your info. Should always set to private and actively screen people you accept into your network.
