Public Speaking Tips
Public speaking very rarely comes easily or naturally for any of us, but there are steps you can take to increase productivity and improve you presentation.
Public speaking is not just about speaking in front of a group of people. It is a great communication tool used to inform, motivate, persuade, influence, or entertain listeners. A good speech should be able to alter the emotions and thoughts of others. The experience of a great motivational speech will inspire the audience to act or make a difference in their lives, in their communities, or in the world. Speaking to the public can be a very difficult task because it is overwhelming to many people. The fear of public speaking is the number one fear for more than 40 percent of the world’s population. If your fear has decreased or destroyed your ability to give effective and powerful speeches, it is recommended that you take some of these great public speaking tips into consideration.
Before you even take the stage or podium, you should familiarize yourself with the audience and the specific occasion. You need to learn about your audience and prepare a speech that the listeners will understand and connect with. If the occasion of your speech is supposed to be serious, then your speech should be serious. If the occasion is more humorous, add some humor to your dialogue.
It is recommended that you should not memorize your entire speech. Being familiar and knowledgeable about your speech is essential, but do not memorize or read from your notes for a long amount of time. It will be very easy to lose your place, but finding out where you left off will be a difficult challenge. Practice is the key to helping you become more comfortable with sharing your words in front of an audience. Practice in front of a mirror or record yourself. Change the tone of your voice or body language if you are not happy with the results. You should also be prepared for questions that your listeners may ask you. Think of some common questions they might ask you and have your answers ready. If a certain question catches you by surprise, just answer the best that you can but do not make up an answer by lying. Following these public speaking tips will help you become more prepared for the big day.
Memorable speeches usually include a story or two in the dialogue. Stories will capture the attention of the audience and help them relate to your speech. You should interact with your audience to help them stay interested and get them more involved. Ask them questions and tell them to ask you some questions that they have. You also need to maintain eye contact during your speech. Do not talk through or past your audience. If you are nervous you should look at the friendly faces in the crowd.
Pay attention to your voice and avoid shouting. However, you should talk loud enough so that the people farthest away from you can hear you. Speak clearly and use your voice to capture the attention of the audience. Be familiar with when you should lower or raise the tone of your voice. Do not think that you have to constantly talk without taking a break. You can pause to think about what you are going to say or to drink some water before continuing. If you make a mistake or pronounce some words wrong, do not apologize. If you feel you have to apologize, just say a quick “excuse me” or “sorry” before moving on.
