Maid of Honor Speeches

Maid of Honor Speech

Maid of honor speeches are one of the most highly anticipated speeches in any wedding, so as the bride's right hand lady it's important that you present the best speech possible.

Maid of honor speeches are a relatively new concept when it comes to wedding tradition, and this means that there isn't any traditional etiquette or a formal set of guidelines for maids of honor to follow.  Even so, however, there are some basic strategies that may be employed to produce some of the best maid of honor speeches possible.

As with any speech of this kind, the first thing you will do for your maid of honor speeches is to come up with a good way to break the ice. This can be anything from a relevant one-liner joke to a brief explanation of who you are and how you are related to the bride. You can also combine the two, telling a short but funny story relating to your relationship with the bride. If you can't achieve humor naturally, though, then do not force it.

You will then move on to telling everyone a bit about the bride, such as what kinds of interests she has, her ambitions and accomplishments, some interesting but brief stories or anecdotes, or anything else that may seem relevant. The idea is to give everyone a brief but relatively complete look into who exactly she is - those people who don't know much about her but are well-acquainted with the groom will get an idea of how she and the groom are connected, as well as how they are different.

Once you have proceeded past the brief look at the bride, you can start telling the attendees a little about how the bride and groom met, how their relationship blossomed and how you can tell that they deeply care for each other. It would be a good idea, when planning your maid of honor speeches, to find out what the groom's best man plans to include in his speech (if he is meant to speak as well) so that you don't end up having to cut out half of your speech because it was already mentioned.

Finally, you will come to the most important aspect of all maid of honor speeches - the tribute. Here again, if the best man has already delivered his speech then you won't want to simply rehash what he has said (or have him rehash what you've said if he speaks after you), so it's always good to plan with him so that both of you have original content, especially when it comes to the tribute. This will be the moment when you wish the couple a life filled with happiness and success, so you want to make it as memorable as possible by spending as much time developing it as you need to.

Maid of honor speeches are generally quite easy to conclude. You will either end off by presenting the next speaker or noting that you will now hand the spotlight back to the main speaker if it's applicable, or you'll simply thank everyone for coming and for listening, and say that you hope they enjoy the rest of the ceremony.
