Retirement Speeches

Retirement speeches commemorate someone’s retirement from a company or post, and are either given by the retiree or the leader of the organization in honor of that person. Retirement speeches are based around an occasion such that the subject of the speech is already known to the audience. Thus you do not need to provide too much of an introduction, but merely a strong and thoughtful speech.

Speak about his career: Retirement speeches should incorporate a decent account of the retiree’s career. This would be in the form of significant moments and stages throughout the career and anything else that would be important to the retiree in terms of his career. This is the perfect opportunity to remind the retiree of all the great memories that were created and all the good and bad times that were shared with his or her colleagues throughout his or her career.

Select a few incidents: Retirement speeches often include a select few incidents that bring about good thoughts and memories. This should be a well-prepared account of some of the retiree’s most cherished memories, which makes it important for the speaker to ensure that the speech is prepared thoroughly and that the speaker is well acquainted with the life and career of the retiree. If the speaker does not have first-hand experience with the retiree then he should interview his or her colleagues so that the information he presents is honest, thoughtful and heartfelt.

Select a theme: When planning retirement speeches, you can decide on a theme that you would like as the central idea for the speech, such as friendship, loyalty, etc. This will give the speech and angle and make it easy to talk for the expected duration while captivating the hearts and minds of the audience.

Humor: Retirement speeches should always include a little bit of humor so that the tone does not become too solemn. This is important because the retirement is a joyous occasion, and the tone and flow should reflect this feeling at all times. Humor is a great way to boost the spirits of everyone in attendance. While everyone at a retirement is usually in heightened spirits already, it is important to bear in mind that there might also be a considerable amount of sadness, since the retiree’s peers are losing a great colleague - one they may have become extremely close to since they had been working with him or her everyday for a long time. Retirement can also change someone’s life drastically - they may move up to a much higher standard of living thanks to a great pension payout, or they might have to face poverty due to poor retirement planning, but either way it can be a very emotional experience, and this is where humor plays an important role in the speech.

Practice: Read out the speech to a few colleagues beforehand to get their reactions once you have planned the speech thoroughly. This is a great occasion for the person who is retiring, and it is important that you do not ruin the momentous spirit by delivering a speech that is not thoroughly prepared and practiced. This will also help you to memorize the speech so that you can make use of cue cards instead of reading the entire speech from a piece of paper. This, in turn, will make the retirement speech memorable and help you to deliver it in a professional way.
