Speeches by Occasion - Overview

special_occasion_0.jpg

Apart from differentiating the intention or purpose of a speech, there are nearly unlimited occasions to deliver a speech, however an occasion has a large influence on the type of speech to be delivered. Certain events call for certain types of speeches, and speech types can be combined for certain occasions.

The style and content of a speech will vary greatly depending on the occasion. Even for a specific individual, speeches by occasion vary greatly.

Joyful occasions shape a light-hearted speech:
When the occasion is light-hearted and happy, the speech which is formed to match the occasion will naturally tend to be cheerful as well. This is fitting because nobody in attendance wants to hear any depressing things when they have been invited to share in a high spirited occasion.

Sorrowful occasions influence a solemn approach: In the same way, a sorrowful occasion calls for a solemn approach, while at the same time there should be an attempt made to lift the spirits of those in attendance. Speeches by occasion such as death would allow for grieving while simultaneously celebrating the life of the deceased.

Celebrations usually give rise to humorous speeches: Often when celebrating people remember good times and this is a concrete example which shapes speeches by occasion. People’s lives often give rise to humorous events and it is frequently at festive events and celebrations when speech-givers recall these humorous events and share them with everyone to heighten the spirits even further.

Business recognition warrants a formal delivery: In celebrating business recognition the speech is often shaped in a very formal or at least semi-formal style. The delivery is often very rigid and may contain very light and widely accepted humor.

These are general speech delivery patterns which prove true in most cases. Indeed there are more specific occasions which have unique patterns and styles.
